Artists to come together for Nepal Tourism Year 2011

APR 04 -
Imagine what would happen if 16 legendary Nepali musicians were brought together under the same roof—the ambience would undoubtedly rock. This is what is going to happen at Tundikhel on April 23, and for anyone who calls himself a Nepali pop aficionado, the Grand National Music Festival 2011 is a concert that is not to be missed.

Om Bikram Bista, Sukmit Gurung, Dhiraj Rai, Nima Rumba, Yogeshwor Amatya, Anil Singh, Sabin Rai, Adrian Pradhan, Sugam Pokharel, Migma Sherpa, Babu Bogati, Ciney Gurung, Dambar Nepali, Resma Sunuwar, Mrit Gurung, and Shiva Pariyar—all names that need no introduction will come together for one dynamic concert. Sadhana Kala Kendra, a centre that has been working to promote Nepali folk music and dance since 1991 has brought together these artists with the motto ‘Let’s Work to Make Tourism Year 2011 a Success’. Milan Moktan, the founder director of Sadhana Kala Kendra says, “The grand gala is going to be a historic event. This is the first time that a festival is being organised with the intention of promoting Nepali Sugam Sangeett (melodious music) and we hope that the Grand Festival is going to do exactly that.”

The organisers hope to be able to provide a grand entrance to the Nepali stars. “We are planning to bring all 16 singers on stage in either a helicopter or a cart from Durbar Marg,” says Moktan. Such an entrance has never been made in the history of concerts in Kathmandu.  Even the grand Bryan Adams concert in February only saw the artist ride a Japanese boutique car. Still, it seems the organisers hope to generate the same kind of excitement and enthusiasm about this concert and are intent on making it financially feasible for those who are either not willing or able to dish out Rs. 2000 for a concert. “The ticket prices are extremely reasonable. We even hope to be able to provide soft drinks and other complimentary gifts worth the ticket money—Rs. 150—that people have to pay,” adds Moktan.

He adds that the event hopes to attract as many audience members as possible (150,000 at least) by coupling unsurpassed musical entertainment with a reasonable price. “The audience turnout at the Bryan Adams concert was huge. We hope to match that number, even surpass it.” The mingling of contemporary Nepali pop and traditional folk is what makes this event really interesting. The event will honour two of Nepal’s most legendary pop singers—Om Bikram Bista and Sukmit Gurung who will be given  the Lifetime Achievement Sadhana Award. The two singers and the other 14 artists will be performing s ome of their most-loved songs. Artists from all of Nepal’s 5 development regions will be performing their own cultural dancees as well.
